WHY AM I ORDERING YOU TO “WRITE, WOMAN, WRITE”?
The idea for Write, Woman, Write came to me on the day of my fiftieth birthday. I was hip-deep in a writing contract for a client (that I love) and had the thought, “Is this the work I want to be doing when I’m fifty-five?”
Three weeks earlier I had finally —finally! — achieved a ten-year goal and published a novel. Now, while I still had enough breath to blow out candles, I was feeling like this might be my best chance to start a new career. The answer to that little voice was clear:
“No, I want to be working with women who have ‘Write a book’ on their bucket list but are struggling to achieve that goal.”
Wow! What a great birthday gift!
It took me about two months to figure out exactly what Write, Woman, Write would be. I made a long list of all the things that helped me get my first book written — courses, books, email subscriptions — and then another list of all the things that helped me launch my second book out into the world — more courses, more books, more email subscriptions.
But really, I realized, what helped me the most in both cases — moving from
- ‘stupefied to think I could write a book’ to
- ‘terrified to share my manuscript with people’ to
- ‘thrilled to have a paperback with my name on the cover in my hands’ —
was meeting and talking to other women who had faced and overcome all of the fears and challenges that I was experiencing.
And that’s when I figured out what I wanted Write, Woman, Write to be. That’s when I figured out how it would be different from all of the other websites, books, and courses that I used over the nine years it took me to go from declaring, “I’m going to write a book” to selling my first eight copies to a local book club. Woo hoo!
WHAT THE HECK IS WRITE, WOMAN, WRITE?
It’s a community of women of all ages, from all over the world, who have a story inside them and are determined to tell it.
Women who know that their story—whether’s it’s a memoir, a novel, a how-to book, a screenplay, or a blog—has value in the world and can create change. From giving women an escape into a fictional world for a few hours, to teaching them how to create beauty out of the mundane, to helping others deal with the emotions of a challenging experience, I believe that every book inside every one of us can change someone.
And I know for a fact that writing a book it will change the author. That’s a for sure!
It doesn’t matter if you’ve never written before or if you’re a multi-published author, there’s room at the Write, Woman, Write Inn for you.
Think of us as a Road Trip Advice Center—but just for writers—staffed by women who have, together, travelled every highway and every backroad on the planet, and are eager to share what they’ve learned on their journeys, the maps and the secret places, with all the women who aren’t quite sure where their storytelling / book-writing / blogging adventure is going to take them.
